Bonjour à tous ! J’espère que vous êtes bien ! (Hello everyone! I hope you are all well!)
So, since I just got back from vacation myself, I decided that this week’s post will be all about how to select the perfect book, or rather books to take with you on you on a journey, trip and or vacation! Let’s begin!

“If you take a book with you on a journey an odd thing happens: The book begins collecting your memories. And forever after you have only to open that book to be back where you first read it. It will all come into your mind with the very first words: the sights you saw in that place, what it smelled like, the ice cream you ate while you were reading it... yes, books are like flypaper—memories cling to the printed page better than anything else.” -Cornelia Funke, Inkheart
Before we even start talking about how to select the right book or books we need to do the following preliminary steps!
Step 1: Planning!
Consider how fast you read and how long you will be away. No one wants to run out of books while at the beach, or during a long plane/car ride. Then take one extra, just to be on the safe side. Unless that is you plan on buying more books while on your journey.
Step 2: Physical Books Only!
If you have a kindle, throw it away. Physical books are better. Just joking. (Kind of.) But for the sake of this post we’ll say you don’t have a kindle, because if you do you could take your entire library with you. And that just defeats the purpose of this post really.
Step 3: Prepare your space!
Make sure you have an extra large suitcase, that has copious amounts of space in it. Don’t worry about fitting all your clothes in first. Pack the clothes around all the books you plan on taking so they don’t damage instead! Now, if you’re flying on a plane most companies let you take two extra carry on bags. Stuff some more books in there if you need some extra space!
Okay now that we got that all out of the way let's talk about how to actually choose the best book, or books to bring with you on vacation!
1: How do you feel?
The most important thing to do after you figure out how many books to bring is to consider your thoughts, feelings and emotions. You wouldn’t want to read a book that is heavily drowned in romance if you just got out of a long relationship. Nor would you want to read a book with the opening scene being a plane crash, if you’re nervous about flying. Consider all of your feelings, and it will help you choose the best fit!
2: Location, Location, Location
Next you need to consider location. Some books are better to read on the beach, because they’re light and airy. No real thinking is needed. Simply you enjoy the story. Whereas, if you are going on a trip to say, Disney World, you might only want to pack smaller books/standalones to read in your down time. That way you can focus on and really enjoy what your vacation has to offer.
3: Favorites!
You don’t need to pack the widest variety of books. Sometimes it's better to pick books from a genre you really enjoy. That way you know you won't be disappointed. Nor is it a bad idea to pack one of your favorite books from that past. Its can be quite comforting to have your favorite story while exploring a new land.
4: TBR!
The next thing you might want to consider when packing your books, is to finally take some books off of that to be read pile. We all have those piles of books that for some reason or another we just haven’t got to. Well now is the time!
5. Bestsellers!
If you’ve exhausted all the other avenues mentioned above, the consider looking in the the various best selling lists for multiple genres to provide inspiration for what next to read! Then later you can be the envy of your friends when they ask, “hey have you read anything new, that’s really good?”
If you follow all of those little tips, then you can create the ultimate list of books to take with you on vacation!
If you have any other tips for how to pick the best book(s), let me know down in the comments! Thanks for reading!
Au revoir,
~Austin
